The New Orleans Pelicans’ next head coach may be on the Boston Celtics’ bench.

The New Orleans Pelicans fired head coach Alvin Gentry more than a month ago and since then there has been absolute silence.

No one knows which direction the Pelicans are heading, and with three of the NBA head coaching jobs already filled, their options are getting more limited.

The Pelicans might be waiting for the playoffs to be over, as there are still several great assistant coaches on the final four teams and they won’t be able to interview them properly until they are out of the Orlando bubble.

With such a young team, the Pelicans might decide to bring in a veteran voice to guide them, someone like Mike D’Antoni. They could also go the complete opposite route by bringing in a young coach who can grow with the team, as the Celtics did with Brad Stevens.

This is a smart choice, as the Pelicans need to build a culture of consistent winning, as Stevens has done in Boston. Knowing who your head coach will be year after year is an advantage, as it helps guide the types of players you draft and target in free agency.

If the Pelicans do decide to go this route, there is an intriguing choice sitting next to Brad Stevens on the Celtics’ bench and that is assistant coach Scott Morrison.

Morrison is an under-the-radar assistant who has an interesting resume, has won everywhere he’s been and has a sharp basketball mind.

He is only 37-years-old, so he would be an out of the box choice for David Griffin, but Morrison could be the first great head coach to come out of the Brad Stevens coaching tree.
