New Orleans Pelicans head coaching search: Scott Morrison of the Boston Celtics

Scott Morrison

Morrison is still in his late 30’s, so he doesn’t have a ton of experience, but then again, neither did Erik Spoelstra when he took over the Heat.

Brad Stevens was also in his 30’s when he took over the Celtics and up until that point had only coached at Butler, so there is precedent for this type of hire.

Morrison coached college basketball in Canada, winning OUA Coach of the Year after taking Lakehead University from perennial laughing stock to national powerhouse and champion in just a few years.

This caught the eye of the Maine Red Claws, the Boston Celtics’ G-League affiliate, who named Morrison head coach in 2014. After winning D-League coach of the year Morrison was promoted to assistant coach under Brad Stevens.

Both Stevens and Danny Ainge rave about Morrison’s basketball mind and work ethic. He used both to work his way up the ladder for the Maine Red Claws, where he was a passionate student of the NBA game. Here he is in his own words:

Morrison has been learning under one of the best coaches of the game, and most importantly, has earned everything he’s gotten. His passion and work ethic would inject some energy into the young Pelicans.

But would he be a good fit?
