New Orleans Pelicans NBA Draft: Aaron Nesmith could be the next Tyler Herro

Aaron Nesmith

Aaron Nesmith may have more Tyler Herro vibe than anyone in the draft.

He’s sort of the opposite of RJ Hampton in that he already has the 3-point shot but needs to develop his dribble penetration and mid-range game.

Like Herro, Nesmith profiles as a deadly 3-point shooter in the NBA and he is already very good at running off screens and moving around the perimeter to get himself open.

Also like Herro, Nesmith is very good at confusing defenders with his dribbling and footwork. If his man closes too hard, Nesmith pump fakes or takes a step or two to the side to get his shot, something we’ve seen Herro do a lot of in the playoffs.

Here’s Nesmith breaking down one of these stepback moves:

Nesmith has also gotten better off the bounce, something he says he’s been working a lot on, so there are going to be new wrinkles to his game when he gets to the league.

Nesmith is a little bigger than Herro, is a better rebounder already and has the length to be an effective perimeter defender.

Nesmith has the tools to be even better than Herro, as he is already a better shooter than Herro was coming out of college and he is a slightly better athlete.

The New Orleans Pelicans need to find more playmakers and scorers to complement Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram. Players like Tyler Herro, who can shoot, make plays, handle the ball and rebound will fit in anywhere, as we’ve seen with Miami.

The Pelicans need to improve their defense in the offseason, but if they can get a dynamic scorer in the draft, they have to consider it.
