Pelicans Send Holiday to San Antonio in Hypothetical Trade: Should They?

Looking at how Jrue Holiday fits with the San Antonio Spurs
Why the Spurs would do it
A touched on this a little in the last slide but let’s break things down some more here.
The biggest factor in this deal is age in my opinion. I mentioned before that the San Antonio Spurs rely heavily upon DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge. Both of those players on massive contracts and with both being in their thirties, it’s hard to trade either on of them.
With both Aldridge and DeRozan occupying roster spots, the San Antonio Spurs will never be bad enough to tank, but they aren’t title contenders either. This means that the Spurs will either need to find a way to unload their stars or add another one.
In this case, they add another one due to the age of another organizational face, Gregg Popovich. Popovich is arguably the greatest coach in NBA history with five championships to his name, but at 71 years old not one knows how much longer he’ll coach.
Adding Jrue Holiday to the Spurs gives the trio of Aldridge, DeRozan, and Popovich one more chance to contend. Holiday comes in as a player that’s a cultural fit and the perfect guard foil to the teams other two stars.
With that combination of star talent and coaching along with a solid rotation behind them, there’s a chance that the Spurs can try to compete in a loaded Western Conference. Shipping off Patty Mills and Rudy Gay for Holiday is great for San Antonio because they give up two hobbled veterans for a star.
