New Orleans Pelicans NBA Draft: Athletic limitations might hold Desmond Bane back at the NBA level

Desmond Bane’s Weaknesses

Desmond Bane has done as much work as he can to become a smart basketball player with little flaws in his game, and that’s how he overcomes his one weakness which is athletism.

Yes, Bane does have an excellent frame for the NBA level but that frame hasn’t granted him any electric athletic abilities that he can use at the next level. His lack of athleticism can hold him back on both ends of the floor.

On offense, Bane’s lack of speed prevents him from having a dangerous first step when he’s trying to attack. This means that rather than being able to go by defenders for easy baskets, Bane often needs to fight through them and try to finish with contact.

Secondly, Bane’s lack of burst makes it harder for him to create his own shot at the next level. We’ll probably never see Bane be able to put together crafty crossovers, hesitation moves, or stepbacks. He’ll have to score within the flow of an offensive system.

Defensively, the lack of speed and vertical burst leaves Bane vulnerable to being beaten by speed threats on offense. Put Bane on speedy guards and he’ll have to get physical to keep up with them which can put him in foul trouble quickly.

Now that we got past the bad qualities in Bane’s game though like look at how his overall game could fit the New Orleans Pelicans future.
