New Orleans Pelicans NBA Draft: An Ideal First Round Scenario
By Nick Alvarez
With the 30th pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, the New Orleans Pelicans select Desmond Bane from TCU
What! Many fans were thinking that the Pelicans would draft a big man here, but they shock the world by selecting Desmond Bane a guard-wing tweener from TCU.
Fans hesitate but the Pelicans’ front office knows what they’re getting in Bane. Bane’s a complete player who’s ready to instantly contribute in the NBA. A great defender, playmaker, and shooter, the Pelicans feel like they just got a steal.
What makes Bane’s addition ecstatic to them is because they believe he also fits a positionless basketball mold. In some games, they know that Bane will be useful filling in as a playmaker for Lonzo Ball and Jrue Holiday. On other nights they see Bane playing the wing while Brandon Ingram or Zion Williamson rest.
The team decides that his toughness and maturity are also a great addition to the team and they feel like if they can get a solid big man in the second round then they’ll have a rotation that’s ready for contention in the Western Conference.
The Results
So how does that sound Pelicans fans? I think if the New Orleans Pelicans first-round unfolds like this then they’ll get stellar reviews from critics. Building a primary rotation of Lonzo Ball, Jrue Holiday, Brandon Ingram, Zion Williamson, Saddiq Bey, and Desmond Bane would be great for the team.
A smart trade with the Boston Celtics could get them in the position to do this if the Pelicans can play a good bluff. Some fans might still be itching for the team to take a big man but with three-second round picks that Pelicans can still come away with a productive big.
This scenario might not generate the glitz and glamor that a blockbuster trade would but it can put the New Orleans Pelicans in a position to be the most talented team in the NBA for the next decade.
