With the 39th pick in the NBA Draft, the New Orleans Pelicans select Tre Jones, guard from Duke University

As the second round unfolds, the New Orleans Pelicans get on the clock at pick #39 and have a tough decision to make. Of course, the team still needs a big man but with three second-round picks, David Griffin decides he can still get a big who’s on their board later. That means he takes one of the best players available who can fill another hole on the Pelicans roster.

That player is Duke’s, Tre Jones. Yes, another a blue devil, Jones showed over the course of two college seasons that he’s a strong facilitating point guard with a knack for defense. For the Pelicans, this makes Jones an obvious selection to fill the team’s void at the back-up point guard position.

Secondary to that, the organization sees traits that Jones is still developing as a scorer and could potentially end up being a better player in the NBA with some development on his shooting and finishing.

Lastly, with the Pelicans evaluating the market for potential superstars that might become available, Jones gives the team value as a trade chip or as a replacement for Lonzo Ball. Filling a roster hole, Jones is a smart selection for the Pelicans.

With the second round continuing to progress, David Griffin decides that it’s time for him to pull off one last move before the draft concludes.
