New Orleans Pelicans: A trade with the Toronto Raptors

The Toronto Raptors are at a turning point. They failed to make it back to the Finals, have six free agents hitting the market and three more players on contracts that are not fully guaranteed.

Marc Gasol has already said he’s done with the NBA and is going to play in Spain, while Serge Ibaka, Fred VanVleet, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Malcolm Miller and Chris Boucher will all be unrestricted free agents.

The Raptors will clearly be building around OG Anunoby and Pascal Siakam but may lose the rest of their core to free agency. They also only have the 29th pick in the NBA Draft, so barring a sign-and-trade, the Raptors are going into a soft rebuild.

That also leaves very little to trade for, which is why the Pelicans might look to swap picks.

A blockbuster, it ain’t.

The Raptors get two second-round picks in exchange for sharpshooting role player Matt Thomas, who didn’t play big minutes for the Raptors but shot over 47 percent from 3-point range.

The Raptors are amazing at finding second-round talent and the Pelicans could use more shooting off their bench, so this makes some sense. Of course, the Pels could just try to take a Matt Thomas type in the second round and probably would, but if they could get a guy who has proven he can make a roster, giving up two marginal picks might be worth it.

The point is that there isn’t much trade fit with the Raptors, so let’s move on.
