The New Orleans Pelicans can use a second-round pick to finally solve their back-up point guard problems

When the New Orleans Pelicans unraveled in the bubble a few months ago, they exposed a major weakness to the NBA world, their depth at the point guard position.

After spending most of the season with Lonzo Ball playing at a high level, the Pelicans appeared in good shape even if the players behind him weren’t anything to write home about. Then Lonzo Ball’s game fell apart in the bubble leaving Frank Jackson to take on big minutes for the team.

I’m not trying to bash Frank Jackson, he performed as well as he could under the circumstances, but he can’t handle high-level NBA competition. That’s why I believe the team needs to add point guard depth to their roster because for as talented as Lonzo Ball is, he’s a streaky player.

Going back to his time with the Los Angeles Lakers, Lonzo Ball would have streaks where his shot is falling and he looks like the next Jason Kidd to suddenly looking like a fringe NBA guard ala Micheal Carter-Williams. Just like the Pelicans, I hope that with maturity Ball will become more consistent, but the Pelicans need some insurance.

That’s why I believe the perfect player for the New Orleans Pelicans to target in the 2020 NBA Draft is Duke’s, Tre Jones. Yes, another Blue Devil, I think Jones can be the answer for the New Orleans Pelicans.

An intriguing blend of skill and upside, Jones could be a perfect target for the Pelicans in the second round. He’s a player I’m high on and worth examining how well he’d fit with the team’s future. Let’s have at it.
