Reason #1- The New Orleans Pelicans defense will take a massive leap next season

I know I’m risking it right away with this prediction, but I believe the New Orleans Pelicans will be a better team defensively in 2021 for a variety of reasons.

The most obvious reason is the team’s coaching hire. As of now, we don’t know who the Pelicans will hire as their next head coach. We do know that they’re looking for someone with a mind for defense. This is clear in the interviews of candidates Stan Van Gundy, Jamahl Mosley, and Will Weaver.

It might be bold to put faith in a brand new coach, but I believe this coach will get the young players’ ears and provide the accountability needed for the Pelicans to become a good defensive team.

Secondly, I think the Pelicans front office is preparing to add more pieces to the team in the draft and free agency that’ll improve the team’s defense. I’d expect the team to add a back-up point guard, a big wing, and another big in free agency.  All three of those additions could bring some added defense to the roster.

I know it sounds crazy, but think about it. Lonzo Ball, Jrue Holiday, and Zion Williamson are all good defensive players. If the Pelicans can just improve the rest of the roster’s defense then I wouldn’t be surprised if we see the Pelicans become a top-15 defense next season.
