New Orleans Pelicans NBA Draft: Sam Merrill is one of this class’ most underrated shot-creators

Sam Merrill’s Strengths

It’s obvious, the biggest strength of Merrill’s game at the moment is his smooth shooting stroke, it’s one of the best in the country.

A senior at Utah State, Merrill’s career shooting averages are stellar. During his college career, he shot 42 percent from deep and 89 percent from the line. Those are elite numbers and they don’t just come on simple catch-and-shoot looks either. At times, Merrill pulls up from deep 3 point range and drills dagger shots. He has that bonafide shooter’s mentality.

What I find more impressive about Sam Merrill, it that he’s not just another second-round shooter, he’s a shot-creator and playmaker too. Run through his tape, and you’ll see it. Merrill uses clean crossovers and creative step-back moves to get his shots off at will. Put the ball in his hands, and you’ll see Merrill operate pick-and-roll action while making smart decisions.

Speaking of decisions, that’s honestly the best part of Sam Merrill’s play. He’s a head-first, team-first guy. For Merrill, it’s not about how can he get his stats, it’s about winning. If he needs to stand in the corner and just drill open shots, he’ll do it. If his team needs him to step up to the plate and run the show, he’ll do that too. That’s why he’s so perfect for NBA teams with loaded rosters.

Those strengths should definitely speak to the New Orleans Pelicans, and potentially even fit with how they’re building the roster but there are weaknesses to Sam Merrill too. Before determining if he’s worth using a second-round pick on, we need to discuss those too.
