New Orleans Pelicans NBA Draft: Players to avoid, Patrick Williams

Patrick Williams

Patrick Williams falls into the category of guys who really look like NBA players. He already has an NBA frame, is very strong and has plus athleticism.

The question is whether he can actually play.

The NBA is not track and field, so being able to jump high and run fast aren’t the only things that matter.

Williams played limited minutes in his one year at Florida State and without the benefit of March Madness or Summer League, no one really knows what he can do.

He only averaged nine points and four rebounds per game in 22.5 minutes, hardly inspiring for a guy who many think is a top-ten pick.

Yes, he was only a freshman, but a top NBA prospect should at least play big minutes for his college team and Williams did not.

He can play defense, and could very well be an elite defender in the NBA, but his lack of shooting and offensive game make him too one-dimensional to be a top pick.

Williams is definitely a project who could pan out, and he should have a long NBA career, but it could be as a role player and not as a star.

Williams has more boom or bust potential than just about anyone in this draft and whoever takes him will be showing some faith in his improvement.
