New Orleans Pelicans NBA Draft: Teams will question Reggie Perry’s defensive fundamentals and quickness
Reggie Perry’s Weaknesses
When talking about Reggie Perry’s weaknesses, they mostly stem from the lack of refinement in his game and lackluster fundamentals.
This is especially true on the defensive end of the floor. When Perry plays defense, he relies too heavily on his athleticism to get the job the done rather than actually understanding good defensive positioning and team defense concepts.
This is why teams were able to attack Perry in the NCAA because plenty of times, he’d be out of position either playing too far up on his opponent or giving his opponent too much cushion. The result was a lot of easy drives on Perry. This is also why Perry hasn’t been an elite shot-blocker, he hasn’t been in the best position to block shots.
The next thing I notice about Perry is that he tends to foul a lot as a result of trying to make up for his mistakes when opponents get past him. At the NBA level, Perry won’t survive if he fouls players on every piece of contact.
Finally, there’s the issue of quickness. Perry isn’t a quick athlete and that can be worrisome on defense as well. If Perry finds himself switched onto a guard then it’s pretty much over for the team because Perry can’t stop them.
I would say that these issues are fairly common with big men and that with practice and good coaching many of them can be fixed if Reggie Perry is willing to put the time into it. Now let’s get to the big question, how does Reggie Perry fit on the New Orleans Pelicans?
