NBA Draft: Top 3 point guards for the New Orleans Pelicans
New Orleans Pelicans NBA Draft: Tre Jones is a safe second-round pick
Tre Jones
Point guard is so deep in this draft that my preference would be for the Pelicans to try and get one with one of their three second-round picks.
There are a lot of solid players who could still be available at the top of the second round especially if the Pels were to trade up from the 39th pick.
There is Tyrell Terry, Theo Maledon or Malachi Flynn, but the guy who is probably the safest pick is Tre Jones from Duke.
He would be joining a team already filled with Duke players and has the skill set to fit right in. Jones is a high-IQ player who at the very least will be a solid backup in the NBA for years to come.
He is a great on-the-ball defender and passer, so would be the perfect guy to run the second unit. He’s not a great shooter, but he does everything else well and is the type of guy who is always in the right position defensively and always seems to make the right pass.
The Pelicans could use players like this, as they already have plenty of “spectacular” and could use some “smart and solid.”
His defense is especially intriguing and he could eventually be a guy who locks up the other team’s point guards on a regular basis.
There is nothing flashy about Jones but he is a safe second-round pick who will be a contributor for someone.
The New Orleans Pelicans don’t have to find a point guard in the draft, but it is the deepest position. Their current draft standing might not make it prudent to take a point guard in the first round, but there should be plenty of talent available in the second.
