New Orleans Pelicans: 4 Free Agents to target post-NBA Draft

Serge Ibaka could be an excellent center compliment to Zion Williamson and the perfect veteran presence for the New Orleans Pelicans

Serge Ibaka is the player who many are speculating that the New Orleans Pelicans are targeting in some capacity and I think that makes perfect sense. Even though Ibaka might command a pretty penny on the open market, he might decide that he’s made his money and head to New Orleans where he can help develop a young team.

If that’s the care, I’m all aboard the Ibaka train. That’s because Ibaka’s game is still great despite the fact he’s going to be 32 years old. He might not be the defensive force that he once was back in his days with the Oklahoma City Thunder, but he’s still a smart intuitive big man equipped for defending the paint.

And on the offensive end of the floor, Ibaka’s game has actually aged like a fine wine. He’s evolved from having freaky athletism to being able to set good screens, score at the basket with touch, and shoot the ball from deep. That’s exactly the type of big man that the New Orleans Pelicans should want to put next to Zion Williamson.

Adding Ibaka to this roster makes the Pelicans competitive and smarter on both ends of the floor. It also gives the young team a vocal leader on the court that can extend past just the standard members of the coaching staff.

I know it’s a longshot since the Pelicans will definitely have to contend with a couple of title-contending teams, but I wouldn’t mind seeing Serge Ibaka give things a go in the Crescent City. There have certainly been worst ideas than adding one of the best veteran big men in the game to this young roster.
