The New Orleans Pelicans are adding new wrinkles for Zion Williamson.

One thing that stuck out about the New Orleans Pelicans last season was that their offense was not very creative, especially when Zion Williamson was on the floor.

Basically, the Pels would just dump it into Zion and hope that he could bully his defender. It worked well at times but teams just started to pack the lane and force him to give up the ball or run into bigger defenders.

Stan Van Gundy has vowed to use Zion Williamson in a variety of ways, which will include handling the ball a lot more.

Zion has the handles and quickness to play some at small forward, especially if the Pels want to run out big lineups to matchup against teams like the Lakers.

He can beat wings off the dribble or use his strength to bull them over, but he should also be looking to make plays for his teammates.

Could Zion Williamson eventually play some point guard? It’s not as crazy as it sounds.

New Orleans Pelicans: Zion Williamson could evolve into a Lebron-like passer

When LeBron James entered the league no one knew what to make of him.

Here is a guy who is 6-foot-8, is stronger than just about anyone in the league, yet handles and passes like a point guard.

Eventually, LeBron became just that and led the league in assists last year on his way to a title with the Lakers. Could the Pels do something similar with Zion Williamson?

The easy answer is no. LeBron is a once-in-a-lifetime passer, the best in the NBA and the best at his position since Larry Bird. Zion doesn’t have that level in him because no one does.

But in short bursts Zion could absolutely be used to initiate the offense much like LeBron does for the Lakers.

It makes the Lakers very difficult to defend, as you either have to move your power forward to the perimeter or guard LeBron with a guard.

The Pels are reportedly working on getting the ball into Zion’s hands more often. This is what Josh Hart had to say:

"“He’s going to have the ball in his hands a lot and be able to playmake and keep improving as a player. That’s something we’ve got to utilize, whether it’s in halfcourt sets or in transition. He has to have the ball in his hands going downhill.”"

Zion is already an unstoppable force of nature on the fast break but it’s in the half-court where he will need to improve his passing and playmaking.

The big man is going to have the ball in his hands a lot more this season, and who knows, we may even see point guard Zion Williamson unleashed, which will be a nightmare for opposing defenders.
