The New Orleans Pelicans struck out in the NBA Draft

Overreaction #3: The Pelicans had a terrible draft!

This is not a knock on Kira Lewis Jr. who was one of the youngest players in the draft and was not expected to contribute right away.

This is, however, a knock on David Griffin.

The Pelicans went into the 2020 NBA Draft with four picks and only added one player to a thin roster with no backup big men.

They could have easily used those second-round picks to actually take a player or to move into the first round.

Watching Precious Achiuwa, who was chosen 20th, get valuable rotation minutes for the Heat was painful when the Pels literally have no backup for Brandon Ingram or Zion Williamson.

There were plenty of guys in the late first-round who might have actually played for the Pelicans. I’m not suggesting they shouldn’t have drafted Lewis, as taking the best player available is the best strategy in the lottery and the Pels feel he was.

But passing on a chance to add a player who could actually contribute off the bench this season could have been a big mistake.
