New Orleans Pelicans: The Pelicans have been terrible in the NBA Draft
Overreaction #3: David Griffin can’t draft!
I’m starting to think this isn’t an overreaction.
Look, Jaxson Hayes is 20-years-old, so it’s not like you can write him off, but at some point he has to show that he has an NBA skill other than dunking.
Griffin was staggered by Hayes’ athleticism but the kid doesn’t know how to play basketball so he may as well have grabbed someone off a track team.
Nickeil Alexander-Walker has shown some flashes and played decently in garbage time against the Suns. He has shown some potential but is not ready for the rotation.
It’s WAY too early to say anything about Kira Lewis Jr. who may end up being an All-Star, who knows. What I do know is that Griffin had to have known that a 19-year-old point guard wasn’t going to help this team right away.
Unless Lewis Jr. proves to be an elite talent, you have to wonder why Griffin didn’t take a player who could provide some depth at one of the forward positions or center.
In a vacuum, these aren’t terrible picks, but when you see what some of the other players taken in these drafts are doing, which is playing meaningful impact minutes for their teams, it’s ok to question Griffin’s choices.
The Pels get right back to it against the Oklahoma City Thunder and will look to remove the memory of this game against the Suns.
