New Orleans Pelicans: The Pels missed out in the NBA Draft

Not using the draft

The New Orleans Pelicans had four picks heading into the 2020 NBA Draft and ended up using only one of them on Kira Lewis Jr.

It is too early to say if the Pelicans made a mistake there, as Lewis is just 19 and hasn’t played much, but it’s not too early to say the Pels may end up regretting not doing more in the draft.

There were guys taken late in the first round who would be playing minutes for the Pelicans right now, most notably Precious Achiuwa and Saddiq Bey, who looks like an early candidate for Rookie of the Year.

The Pelicans could have tried to move up to get another player and there were guys available who would be in the rotation right now.

Even if they had only used their 2nd rounders, they still could have gotten a young player with upside who might even crack the rotation. Jordan Nwora is one of them.

The Pelicans have no depth right now because they didn’t really add any in the offseason, they just replaced guys who were leaving or did nothing at all.

Counting on Melli to play a big role, not getting a backup center who can play and deciding to trade all the picks in this draft may end up haunting the Pelicans if they don’t make the playoffs.
