New Orleans Pelicans: Should Pels go for it or be patient?
New Orleans Pelicans: The Pels should be patient
The argument for patience
Nothing is built overnight.
It’s easy to see Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram looking like All-NBA talent and want to take advantage as soon as possible, but it’s also easy to forget that they are just 20 and 23-years-old, respectively.
The Pelicans have one of the top duos in the NBA and both are under 25, so there is no reason to rush.
The Pelicans can conceivably use their treasure trove of draft assets to take chances on top-end talent or to move up and grab a guy they like.
The Pels are still trying to figure out exactly what their two cornerstones can be and the best types of players to put around them and that will take time. Zion still hasn’t even played half an NBA season yet and is only beginning to evolve into what he can be.
If the Pelicans build their team around young guys and the draft, they will always have the cap space to add a veteran or a free agent, and those will come flocking to play with Zion and BI once the team starts winning.
The New Orleans Pelicans have one of the best young cores in the league and can take their time building around it.
Also, we haven’t even seen what this team can do as constructed. The Pels are 5-7 and it’s not like they are out of the playoff hunt this season. There is no reason to make a big trade when they can still get to the playoffs with their young guys logging big minutes and learning how to win.
This is how you build a consistent winner around young talent. Let them play together, grow, take their lumps and develop chemistry.
Of course, there is another argument…
