The Brooklyn Nets decide that giving Dinwiddie to the New Orleans Pelicans in exchange for J.J. Redick helps them go all-in for a title this year

Why the Nets make the trade

From the Brooklyn Nets’ perspective, this deal is simple. The Nets have three of the best players in the NBA on their team in Kyrie Irving, James Harden, and Kevin Durant. Simply put, they’re looking to win now.

That means the Nets would love to add more depth going into the trade deadline to bolster their chances at making a shot at the Finals, and J.J. Redick helps them do that.

We all know what Redick is, he’s 36-years old and in the twilight of his career, but that doesn’t mean he can’t help a contending team if his 3 point shot is falling consistently.

By acquiring Redick, the Nets are betting that his 3 point shot continues to come back to form and that he can run off screens and hit open shots when the defense collapses on the Nets’ stars.

In return, the Nets give the Pelicans Spencer Dinwiddie, a great guard who’s still in his prime, but one who’s unable to help the Nets this season due to his partially torn ACL. The Nets wouldn’t lose much by trading Dinwiddie because he’ll be a free agent after this season with a price tag that’ll be beyond the Nets’ budget.

Essentially, the Nets would give up nothing and get J.J. Redick back with the hopes of winning a championship. Very easy for them, but now let’s assess why this move is worth the risk for the New Orleans Pelicans.
