It’s fair to say that if Zion Williamson of the New Orleans Pelicans were to compete in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, the ratings would be through the roof.

The ratings wouldn’t be the only thing, as Zion himself has shown the ability to jump higher than gravity and his 285 lb. frame should allow.

Aside from watching short guys like Spud Webb, the next best thing would be to see the big fellas get up there and do their thing above the rim.

Zion has had fewer huge slams than last season, but still pulls a few out a game that make you wonder how what you just saw is even possible.

There are obviously some compelling reasons to put Zion Williamson in the slam dunk contest if you are a fan, but there are also some good reasons that he should stay as far away as possible.

New Orleans Pelicans: Fans would love to see Zion Williamson in the dunk contest

Like I said, if you put Zion in the dunk contest people are going to watch, but that doesn’t mean he should do it.

Star players have mostly stayed away from this event for the same reason Zion Williamson should, which is that he could get hurt.

Zion Williamson is playing big minutes and is in the best shape of his career, so there is no reason to risk that by putting him in a novelty event, no matter how fun it would be.

There is also a good chance that Zion is going to make the All-Star team. The dunk contest is going to be held at halftime of the All-Star Game, so I assume anyone who is in the game will not also be in the dunk contest.

But it would be pretty fun to see him do stuff like this.

It’s highly unlikely that the New Orleans Pelicans would want Zion Williamson to risk his health by participating in the dunk contest, but it is an exciting prospect and one that we might see at some point in the future.

Zion is one of the most electric dunkers I’ve ever seen and it would be tempting, but the pragmatist in me says to run away and stay healthy.
