New Orleans Pelicans: Time limits have advantages

Another effect created by the time limits was price stabilization. With fewer sellers able to undercut the market and make small profits for themselves, each moment has been gradually climbing back to the prices of a few weeks ago. This is a good thing for collectors long-term as prices should rise for moments across the board but only the rarest of rare could match the values of Mickey Mantle rookie cards.

Some good news from the site is that in the middle of the week, they did a “Stress Test” to see how the site would handle a large increase in traffic with little notice of the increase. With little notice on Tuesday, the Top Shot team announced a surprise 5,000 pack drop. This saw close to 80,000 people (if memory serves) queued up for a chance at these packs, this drop went off without a hitch.

Almost immediately after this 5,000 pack drop, Top Shot announced another 35,000 pack drop to be released an hour later. Again this drop was successful with no delays, some satisfied customers, and many more chomping at the bit to get the next drop.

It wasn’t long before that next opportunity was revealed, the 2021 All-Star Game drop would occur Thursday at 2 PM Central. This is where the bad news comes, the traffic to the site was so large in anticipation of this drop that it caused the site to crash momentarily. The All-Star drop would have to be delayed.

One interesting wrinkle Top Shot introduced this week was the requirement of owning moments to even join the queue for a drop. For the All-Star drop, you needed to own three moments for a shot at the rare moments available in these packs. What made these moments so rare you ask? Well, they were created from highlights that happened in the All-Star game and there will only be 2021 of them.

The key is if you want to find a value play, scouring the market after a pack drop is the way to go. Many flippers are looking to make back what they spent with a little extra on top. You can secure a moment from your favorite player for below-market prices or buy and stash a moment to sell at a later date.
