New Orleans Pelicans vs. Wizards: Grades for the wings

A-. . Wing. New Orleans Pelicans. NAJI MARSHALL

What a game from Naji Marshall.

Talk about making the most out of an opportunity. The former Xavier standout continues to play great for the New Orleans Pelicans. He came off the bench because of Lonzo Ball’s return and just about grazed a triple double with 16 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists against the Wizards.

Marshall is blossoming in front of our eyes. For now, he has silenced any questions over whether he is a legit NBA player or just a G League guy getting a chance due to injuries. Marshall deserves to have his two-way deal converted to a regular contract as soon as possible. He has quickly become indispensable.

I am a huge fan of what Marshall brings to the Pels. He is always aggressive, can shoot a little (his 33 percent from three is respectable enough), and excels at attacking the rim. Marshall’s propensity for drawing free throws was once again on display, as he shot six foul shots.

Behind Brandon Ingram, Marshall was the best Pelican on attack against Washington. Down the other end of the floor, he was the pick of the litter. Marshall had to battle against Russell Westbrook and Bradley Beal most of the time but handled himself admirably.

B. . Wing. New Orleans Pelicans. JAMES JOHNSON

James Johnson was steady against the Wizards.

He didn’t do anything wildly impressive, but the veteran forward’s ability to put the ball on the floor and attack the basket continues to be really valuable for Stan Van Gundy. Johnson usually makes the Pelicans better and this game was no exception.

I felt that New Orleans played a lot more fluidly when Johnson was on the floor. His do-it-all skill set means that he can connect things on the court when a possession is on the verge of falling through.

Johnson scored 11 points and dished out three assists in the nation’s capital. Even if he doesn’t stay with the Pels after this season, trading for him was worth it.

. Wing. New Orleans Pelicans. WES IWUNDU. N/A

Wes Iwundu played for 11 seconds and then checked out. His role going forward is expected to be nominal, one would think.

With the Pelicans struggling to shoot the three so much, I can’t see the former Kansas State wing cracking the rotation. Maybe he can provide some solid defense occasionally and stay ready if someone gets into foul trouble.

I would prefer to see what James Nunnally can do until the end of the season. The international journeyman had a rough debut in a Pels uniform, but his shooting is a lot more intriguing than what Iwundu contributes.
