The NBA Playoffs have shown that the New Orleans Pelicans have a lot of work to do if they want to be a contender.

The Pelicans flamed out again this season even though Zion Williamson blossomed into a superstar.

For them to be considered a success next season, the Pels need to show that they have a plan, have grown internally  and they need to make the playoffs.

The remaining playoff teams all have a chance at the title this season and all of them have things that the Pelicans will need if they want to compete for one next season.

New Orleans Pelicans: The Suns, Hawks and Bucks

I have grouped these three teams together because all are somewhat similar to the New Orleans Pelicans in that they are led by a superstar.

The Suns have Devin Booker, the Hawks have Trae Young and the Bucks have Giannis Antetokounmpo. The difference between the Pels and these teams is that they all have quality role players around their stars.

The Suns have guys like Jae Crowder and Mikal Bridges. The Hawks have guys like Clint Capella, Kevin Huerter and D’Andre Hunter, while the Bucks have Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday.

While none of these players are superstars, they are the exact type of role players the Pelicans will need if they want to be next season’s Suns.

New Orleans Pelicans: Brooklyn Nets show important of a Big 3

The Brooklyn Nets have shown that having three elite scoring options is one way to overcome a lack of defense and depth.

The Pelicans have two of those three options in Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram but are still searching for the third.

Could it be Lonzo Ball? Maybe, but it’s likely the Pelicans will have to find their third option externally.
