New Orleans Pelicans head coaching search: Becky Hammon provides a detail-orientated mindset

Obviously, San Antonio Spurs Assistant Coach Becky Hammon has been at the top of the list for recent head coach vacancies. But she has received the short end of the stick and was recently snubbed for the Portland Trail Blazer opening.

Hammon is a proven winner, she has won a gold medal, played in the WNBA (undrafted), and won an NBA summer league title with the Spurs. She also led the league in assist in the WNBA in 2007.

On the other hand, Hammons’s attention to detail and knowledge of the game separates her from most coaching candidates.

It’s clear that the Spurs’ assistant coach can command a locker room. As the Spurs assistant, she has continued to grow under Greg Popovich who trusts his whole coaching staff.

The fact that the colorado State product was a pass-first point guard helps the New Orleans Pelicans who desire for their back-court to grow. If hired she would be able to help mature Lonzo Ball’s game which would help the rest of the team.

In addition to Ball’s growth, she would be able to help Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram with technical portions of their game. Not to mention she would be able to implement an offense that is not iso-heavy.

One player who has benefitted from Hammons coaching is Dejounte Murray.
