New Orleans Pelicans: There has to be shooting around Zion Williamson all of the time

One thing that the SVG era did give us was the introduction of Point Zion, which was very effective at times for the Pelicans.

Having a massive, super strong point guard that no one can stop is a huge advantage, but Van Gundy wasn’t creative enough with Zion as the primary ball handler.

He used too many lineups that only had one or two shooters around Zion, which often led to defenses just collapsing and daring Zion to kick it out.

I got so tired of watching Zion Williamson try to plow through four defenders while Eric Bledsoe and Lonzo Ball stood on the perimeter twirling their thumbs.

The Pelicans need more ball movement this season, to be less predictable and to always have shooting around Zion Williamson so that teams will have to respect that threat on the perimeter.

Did the Pels do enough to improve their shooting? That is yet to be seen, but what we do know is that Zion Williamson isn’t going to last a whole season if he has to take nightly beatings like he did last year.

The offense needs to be faster, more open, have less isolation and Zion Williamson should always have at least three shooters on the floor with him.
