New Orleans Pelicans: Let the young guys make mistakes

I am all for making rookies and young players earn minutes, as no one should just be handed anything, especially if they are not playing well.

But Stan Van Gundy was quick with the hook last season, which clearly had an effect on the confidence levels of some of their young guys.

He pulled Nickeil Alexander-Walker from the rotation early last season after just a few bad games. NAW definitely needed to improve his shot selection and decision making, but it’s hard to do that from the bench.

Jaxson Hayes played much better after returning from his benching and sometimes that is what it takes to wake a guy up, but I am also for letting young guys play through and learn from their mistakes.

The Pelicans have one of the youngest teams in the NBA, so these guys are going to screw up. Instead of having them looking over their shoulders all year, I’d love for Willie Green to be more of a teacher who can instruct on the fly and not just teach through benching guys for extended periods.

The Pelicans have a chance to be one of the most exciting young teams in the NBA and I am looking forward to a new style of play from coach Willie Green.
