New Orleans Pelicans trends at the end of March

The starters

Jaxson Hayes-Holding steady

To use the word “steady” to describe Hayes is actually a great compliment, as the 21-year-old has always battled inconsistency in his young career. He’s just been really solid of late, not trying to do too much, running the floor hard and limiting his mistakes on defense. The Pels needed some help offensively last night with Ingram struggling and Hayes provide an efficient 18 points.

Jonas Valanciunas-Trending up

The Pelicans were running more of their offense through Valanciunas with Ingram out and now that he is back, the big man hasn’t missed a beat. He just keeps on grinding out huge games night after night, providing solid production from the center position. JV is having the best season of his career and gives the Pels a bit of toughness down low.

Herb Jones-Holding steady

Herb joined Chris Paul as the only Pelicans’ rookies to ever record 100 steals. He added four more last night, which gives him 10 over the last two games. Jones does not play like a rookie on either end and should getting some votes for the All-Defense team.

CJ McCollum-Trending up

McCollum got a much-deserved standing ovation in his return to Portland last night right before dropping 25 points on his old team. He has scored 25 or more in five of his last six games and is averaging 25.9 points, 6.4 assists and 4.8 rebounds in 20 games since joining the Pelicans. I think it’s fair to say this trade worked out for New Orleans.

Brandon Ingram-Trending up

Ingram was magnificent against the Lakers in his first game back, carrying the Pelicans in the third quarter before Trey Murphy III took over. He didn’t shoot the ball well last night but got to the line 14 times to make up for it. Having him in the lineup is a boost to the whole team, so let’s hope he can stay healthy for the final six games.
