Zion Williamson’s extension: The money issue

The NBA is a business and decisions usually come down to money, which is the main reason Zion Williamson is going to sign a max extension with the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Pels can offer more money and years, which is why no high-profile player has ever failed to sign a rookie extension.

Even if Zion wanted to leave (which I absolutely don’t think he does), it would still be smart to sign the max deal and force his way out like Anthony Davis did. Again, I don’t think Zion is going to do that, but there is really no reason not to sign an extension, as he could still leave if he wanted to and would be leaving guaranteed money on the table.

You can argue that Zion might make more money in a bigger market, but he is already signed to a lucrative shoe deal (one of the biggest rookie deals of all time) and the contract he signs will give him generational wealth whether it comes from New Orleans or a team on the coast.

There’s also the issue of rosters, and the New Orleans Pelicans have a good one.
