New Orleans Pelicans: Remember when Devonte’ Graham did this?
The start to last season was one the New Orleans Pelicans and Devonte’ Graham would rather forget.
The team got off to an abysmal start, as Graham was trying to impress with his new team and fanbase.
He was replacing the popular Lonzo Ball, so Devonte’ Graham had his work cut out for him to win over fans. Things didn’t start well for the team, as they got off to a horrific 2-14 start, though Graham was putting up big numbers and his acquisition was looking like a big win for the Pelicans.
Then Graham got hurt, had to miss a few games, and hit a wall, going through a tough stretch that saw him only crack double-digits a couple of times.
By the time the December 15th game against the Oklahoma City Thunder rolled around, the team was just 8-21 and Graham was struggling, but it all turned around because of a miracle heave.
New Orleans Pelicans: Devonte’ Graham’s miracle shot
The Pelicans had already lost to the tanking Thunder earlier in the season, so they needed to get a win to avoid going into an even more embarrassing hole. At that point, the two teams had the same number of wins, which was not a good look for the Pelicans, who had playoff aspirations even though they were without Zion Williamson.
It looked like they had pulled it off, as Brandon Ingram came out and put up 34 points and the Pelicans were leading late before Shai Gilgeous-Alexander tied the game with just seconds remaining.
But it’s not over until the buzzer, and SGA left just a smidge too much time, which allowed Graham the chance to do this:
Graham’s heave was officially measured at 61 feet and stunned the OKC crowd, who were still buzzing about the play before.
The shot not only gave the Pels a much-needed win, but was one of the plays that turned their season around, as set off a run where they won five of their next six games.
The shot injected some life into a team that desperately needed it and was one of those moments that can change the momentum of the season.
The season didn’t ended well for Graham, and his offseason has been even worse, but he had one of the biggest moments of last season.
