New Orleans Pelicans Assistant Coach Jarron Collins to interview with Pistons
By Mat Issa
On Monday, Shams Charania announced that New Orleans Pelicans’ Lead Assistant Coach Jarron Collins has been granted permission by the organization to interview for the Detroit Pistons’ Head Coaching position.
Collins has been a member of Head Coach Willie Green’s staff since Green joined the team last season.
Collins got his start on the coaching/scouting side of things in 2013 as a scout for the Los Angeles Clippers. From there, Collins joined Head Coach Steve Kerr’s staff upon Kerr’s arrival in 2014. He started out as a player development coach, but after only one season, he was promoted to assistant coach. In total, he spent seven seasons with the organization, contributing to three NBA titles in the process.
Before he started coaching, Collins had a long and successful playing career that spanned across ten seasons with three different teams (the Clippers, Utah Jazz, and Portland Trail Blazers).
The Pistons’ head coaching chair was originally occupied by Dwane Casey, who led the team for five years before recently announcing that he’d decided to pivot over to a front office role with the organization.
The Pistons have not been competitive for quite some time. They have not been to the playoffs in four years and haven’t won a playoff game since 2008. They are in the middle of a rebuild and will likely look for a youthful voice to help guide this team back to their past glory. Being that Collins is only 44, he could be the young soul the team is looking for.
