Where does Willie Green rank among NBA coaches in likability?
By Mat Issa
On Tuesday, The Athletic released an anonymous player survey asking a multitude of questions ranging from things like who the best defender in the league was to who is the most overrated player.
One question that was asked in the survey was, “[w]hich current coach, aside from your own, would you most want to play for?” Here are what the results were.
For this particular question, The Athletic received 95 responses. To no one’s surprise, San Antonio Spurs’ legendary coach Greg Popovich finished in first place with 25.3% of the vote (24 votes). Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr finished in second place with 13.7% of the vote (13 votes), and Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra finished in third with 9.5% (9 votes).
Surprisingly, the New Orleans Pelicans lead man Willie Green was not one of the 15 coaches explicitly named in the chart above. However, as you can see in the fine print below, he was one of the nine coaches included in the “Other” section.
Green just completed his second season as a head coach. And this list is more biased toward coaches who have been around longer and have more winning pedigree. By all accounts, Green is a very well-liked coach around the league, and his standing on lists like this will only improve as he gets more experience under his belt.
Overall, 24 of the 30 NBA head coaches received votes in this survey. The only six coaches that did not receive any votes were Atlanta Hawks’ coach Quin Synder, Cleveland Cavaliers’ coach J. B. Bickerstaff, Houston Rockets’ coach Stephen Silas, Minnesota Timberwolves’ coach Chris Finch, New York Knicks’ coach Tom Thibodeau, and Washington Wizards’ coach Wes Unseld.
