4. Cody Zeller

Zeller signed with the Heat in February where he helped Miami reach the NBA Finals. The veteran big man backed up Bam Adebayo throughout the playoffs, and his play earned him a one-year deal with the Pelicans this offseason.

New Orleans needed a backup big man behind Jonas Valanciunas, and Zeller provides depth. The newest addition is a strong rebounder and finisher that can play next to Zion Williamson or Larry Nance Jr. in the frontcourt. Zeller is a capable fill-in starter if the Pelicans get bitten by the injury bug again, and the veteran is comfortable playing any role.

If things go south in New Orleans this season, Cody Zeller will be a prime buyout candidate. The Pelicans can let him out of the remainder of his contract, and the 30-year-old will be free to sign with a contender of his choosing. Any team searching for a reserve big man would have some interest if Zeller hits the open market.

He is the team’s only buyout option this year. Zeller’s run to the NBA Finals with the Heat could have him eager to join a contender if the Pelicans have another down season. His one-year contract could be added as a salary-matcher in a trade too, if New Orleans finds the right deal.
