Laying out the New Orleans Pelicans trade proposal for Jarrett Allen

The Cavaliers are exploring how to maximize their roster after a disappointing first-round playoff exit. Can they win with two big men and two small guards? If not, Cleveland should be exploring the trade market for wing help. Jarrett Allen could be the first player on the block, and the Pelicans are rumored to be interested (subscription required).

Could the two sides strike a deal? It would likely take a third team, who is willing to take on Jonas Valanciunas’ expiring contract. FanSided’s Ian Levy offered this mock trade in a recent piece.

The Mavs have been searching for a starting center for years, so they would be ecstatic to pick up Valanciunas for Tim Hardaway Jr. The current Pelicans big man gives Dallas a third offensive threat behind Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving and makes them one of the best offensive teams in the league.

The Cavaliers get two wings with different skill sets. Herbert Jones cannot be traded until Jan. 15, but he provides defense and toughness on the wing. The 6’8 forward can guard any player on the floor and instantly improves Cleveland’s D. THJ is a shot-maker and floor spacer that should open up their offense. This move allows them to shift Evan Mobley to the five and better space the floor.

What about the New Orleans Pelicans? They give up Jones and Valanciunas to get Jarrett Allen and Isaac Okoro in this proposal. Does that make sense?
