The New Orleans Pelicans have at times lacked a strong, consistent leadership voice this season, but the return of Dejounte Murray changes that. In his first game back, the veteran guard finished with 13 points, two rebounds, three assists, and one steal, including a clutch layup that helped seal the Pelicans’ 113–109 win over the Warriors. Yet it was what he said on social media afterward that signaled a shift for the remainder of the Pelicans' season.
At the end of January, ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel reported that Murray and his representation were looking for a change of scenery at the trade deadline. Nothing materialized, but the speculation lingered around the franchise as Murray worked his way back from injury.
Following Tuesday’s win, Murray addressed the rumors directly on X by responding to a fan who said he couldn't see Murray on the team past this season. Murray made it clear that neither he nor his agent ever requested a trade and that he is fully locked in to help the Pelicans push for the play-in.
He then doubled down on the play-in push statement with another tweet. Murray explained that the team isn't a contender but can use this second half to build momentum going into next season while also fighting for the 10th seed.
Duh!!! Are we a contender? No. Can we reach top 6 spot? No. Can we build some momentum playing together and build winning habits rest of the season? Yes. Can we treat every game like a championship game and win win win? Yes. Can we get in them last spots in the play in??? Duhhhhh https://t.co/NZ9tfYgrwD

This type of mentality is why Murray brings so much value to this team
At 17–42 and 14th in the Western Conference, it would be easy to pack it in. Murray isn’t wired that way. And that mindset is contagious. For a Pelicans team whose core lacks vocal leadership at times, you need someone who brings the energy Murray does to set the tone.
The second half of the season isn't a time to throw in the towel, and this group still has 23 games left to improve and build habits. Every game is valuable in the NBA, not just from a results standpoint or what it means for this season, but also from a long-term perspective. For a team with 12 of 15 players on this roster under contract next season, this final stretch is a time to build habits that lead to a better 2026-27 campaign. And Murray's return will help ensure that happens.
Murray's tweets weren't just about being bought in—they were a reminder of the shift in energy this team has with him back.
His confidence and willingness to compete, regardless of record or circumstance, set the tone for a young group still learning to win consistently. Veterans who approach each game with the urgency Murray does can elevate the standards within a locker room and help build a culture. Down the stretch, his presence shifts not only nightly performance but also the mentality the team carries into the arena and team facilities daily.
