The NBA offseason is just around the corner. This means it’s almost time for Pelicans fans to debate whether Zion Williamson can finally make the leap to become the superstar we always dreamt of him being.
Add head coach Jamahl Mosley to list of people who think Williamson can still make that leap. During an interview Mosley claimed the Pelicans star player has a fire in him that will allow him to improve this season.
"Having conversations with him over the phone, there is that fire you can tell is in his system, in his voice, of saying what he wants to do, what he knows he can accomplish... I know that he is going to take another leap this year"

There are probably a lot of you reading this right now with your eyes rolling in the back of your head.
Fans are likely tired of hearing how Williamson is ready to take the next step. That is a very fair take.
Many are also probably tired of hearing the new head coach of the Pelicans telling them they can unlock something in Williamson that we haven’t seen yet. Mosley is already Williamson’s fifth head coach.
Jamahl Mosley is the right head coach for Zion Williamson
What makes Mosley the right person to finally lead Williamson to his full potential? Mosley has experience as the Orlando Magic head coach overseeing highly talented players like Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero reaching their star potential.
Mosley also is the type of tough, no-nonsense coach who may finally be able to push Williamson to another level.
Of course, this really is just hopeful thinking at this point. But if there ever is a time to be hopeful it’s in the offseason.
If we look at the numbers though, maybe Williamson is on the brink of a breakout season. Last year was the first time in a while it felt like he was playing more on the court than he was sitting on the bench injured.
Williamson got hurt earlier in the season and we all braced for another really long recovery, but the Duke standout came back and played 62 games. This was the first time in his seven-year career where it felt like Williamson didn’t stay on the injured list for an absurdly long time.
The other good sign is that Williamson stayed in good shape throughout the season. It did take him some time to build up his stamina, but he kept his weight down.
When he was on the court Williamson played at high level, but there is definitely more there that Pelicans fans hope Mosley can unlock.
Mostly likely we will get a photo or short video clip of Williamson in the gym that will get us excited for the season. Unfortunately, we won’t know if next season will be any different until the season starts.
Let’s just dream for a minute here. Maybe Williamson will build off the momentum of last season and come into 2026-2027 season in great shape and fully healthy.
We can also dream that Mosley will connect with Williamson in a way Alvin Gentry, Stan Van Gundy, Willie Green and James Borrego couldn’t.
If these things happen and the Pelicans and Williamson finally get some luck in the health department, there is reason to believe Williamson can improve.
Ultimately time will tell if Williamson really makes that leap. All we can do now is sit back and hope. Maybe 2026-2027 will finally be there year we get the Zion Williamson we’ve been dreaming of.
