Pelicans fans should revolt if front office trades Trey Murphy III in rumored deal

In Jake Fischer's latest report, Trey Murphy was mentioned as a trade target for the Golden State Warriors.

The NBA offseason has been super quiet as of late, with restricted free agents Jonathan Kuminga, Josh Giddey, Cam Thomas, and Quentin Grimes stalling any movement. These four are the biggest fish in the free agency left, yet they remain unsigned because no one can truly determine their value.

Today's Jake Fischer bomb gave us some clarity on what's really happening in restricted free agency, and Pelicans fans may not be happy about it.

Fischer mentioned that Trey Murphy III is a name that the Warriors have expressed interest in as part of a Jonathan Kuminga sign and trade.

"That the Warriors have a strong affinity for Murphy and have made outreach to New Orleans as recently as this summer. Yet sources say that the Pelicans, to be clear, have batted away calls for the 25-year-old. Another team known to have registered trade interest in Murphy, sources say, is San Antonio."

Even though he said that the Pelicans have been turning down offers for Murphy, it's still extremely irritating to hear his name continue to be brought up in trade conversations.

At 25 years old, Trey will be entering his prime, coming off a year where he averaged 21.2 points per game. The sky's the limit for him, and the Pelicans would be foolish to move him, especially for the likes of Jonathan Kuminga.

Trey being traded isn't going to happen

If the Pelicans were to trade Trey Murphy, it would've happened by now. Joe Dumars deserves a lot more credit than the average fan gives him. There wouldn't have been a better time to trade Murphy if that had been in Dumars' plans.

Draft night would have been the ideal time to move Murphy, as many Western Conference teams may have been looking to counter the KD addition, the Rockets made days earlier.

According to Brett Siegel of Clutch Points, the asking price for Murphy is firm at multiple firsts and proven young talent. These are both things that the Warriors can't offer the Pelicans. Kuminga hasn't proved anything to this point, which is why he is struggling to get a contract right now.

On top of that, Kuminga is an awful fit with the Pelicans, as he is another guy who needs to dominate the ball to be a threat offensively. His inability to be a consistent threat from three (career 33.2% three-point shooter) would only worsen the Pelicans' spacing.

Although the Spurs could make a compelling offer featuring Carter Bryant, Devin Vassell, and multiple draft picks, I think the Pelicans would be better off holding onto Trey.

Intentionally, this report from Fischer may have spooked Pelicans fans, as Trey Murphy is beloved by the fan base and has All-Star potential. However, it's obvious the Pelicans have no real interest in trading Murphy, especially for as poor a return as Golden State could offer.
