Heading into the final stages of the offseason, the New Orleans Pelicans have one open roster spot. With this final roster spot, the Pelicans are likely looking for a veteran presence, shooting, and someone they can get on the minimum.
Some of the leading candidates are Malcolm Brogdon and Amir Coffey. Both guys bring positional size and versatility, as Coffey at 6'8" can play the two through small ball five, and Brogdon at 6'4" can play the one through three in some three guard lineups. Both guys are good floor spacers and could be effective in both larger roles and lesser roles.
Both Brogdon and Coffey would instantly make the Pelicans' second unit better, as both guys have a lot left in the tank and have been in winning environments throughout their careers. Brogdon, especially, who is still just a couple of years removed from winning Sixth Man of the Year and being the 4th or 5th best player on a team that made the finals.
Unfortunately, because of how good both of these two are, their market is probably still packed with teams that could offer a better deal than New Orleans.
This disappointing reality means not getting Brogdon or Coffey means the Pelicans will likely have to pivot, but could set their sights on Seth Curry.
The now 34-year-old wing has spent 11 seasons in the NBA and is a career 43.3% three-point shooter. He still fills all the Pelicans' needs with this final roster spot as someone who they could get on the minimum, is a floor spacer, and can bring some experience/veteran presence.
This could be a match made in heaven
While Seth doesn't have the resume his older brother has, he has still carved out a really successful NBA career and plays with a similar playstyle as his dad, Dell, as both could get hot from deep in an instant. He has always played with a relaxed, sneaky playstyle that has helped him remain healthy throughout most of his career.
During the 2024-25 season, he appeared in 68 games and shot an unreal 45.6% from deep on just under three attempts per game. With New Orleans ranking bottom five in three-point shooting last season, Curry would instantly be able to mend that flaw.
He could also be a great person for Willie Green to lean on if Jordan Hawkins struggles to break out, as both play with a similar style as three-point specialists. Curry would easily be able to plug in and fit with the Pelicans from day one.
Signing Seth Curry isn't the most glamorous move and isn't going to be the front page of any newspaper, but it would still be an incredibly underrated move. His level of consistency as a three-point shooter throughout his career would make him a perfect addition to the Pelicans' bench.
