Pelicans losing more than just games as Willie Green’s seat heats up

Dear Pelicans fans, I know times are extremely tough, but we can get through this together.

Heading into the season, expectations from the New Orleans Pelicans front office and fan base were extremely high, with a healthy Zion Williamson and Trey Murphy III looking to break out. Herb Jones back healthy and ready to re-anchor the defense. Jordan Poole and Kevon Looney both bringing championship experience. And two extremely fun young rookies in Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen. All these things were expected to amount to, at a minimum, a fun and competitive team, but head coach Willie Green has failed to even achieve that level of success to start this season.

This 0-6 start has fans tired, frustrated, and demanding that the front office make a significant change. And while nothing is official, it appears the clock is ticking on Green's future with the franchise.

The front office needs to take action before it’s too late

If the front office doesn’t make a change soon, it might start losing some of its most loyal fans. ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel reported on X that Green is expected to be the team's coach on Tuesday against Charlotte, and his replies were flooded with enraged fans. Some fans were calling for the team to be relocated, while others asked when enough would be enough, but no reply stood out more than this one.

Fans are so enraged by the lack of action from owner Gayle Benson and President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars that there are now talks of boycotting the team. Which may sound a little extreme, but that’s the point fans are at with this organization. New Orleans is hungry for a successful basketball team, something it has not had in its history.

And every year, they are told this is the season where the Pelicans will be that team, only to be continuously let down when they fall short. Fans entered the season with tempered expectations; they didn't expect a championship, nor did they think they would be a 50-win team. However, what is leaving fans shocked through the team's first six games is that they are winless and look so unbelievably dysfunctional on both ends of the floor.

New Orleans sports as a whole are suffering, and the Pelicans aren’t helping. In a year where two New Orleans sports juggernauts are struggling, with the Saints starting 1-8 and LSU football ranked 10th in the SEC, and having just fired their head coach, the Pelicans' disappointment is adding to the misery. The Pelicans had a chance to be the team to keep New Orleans sports fans hopeful, but all they’ve done is add to what has already been a disastrous year.

For the sake of the fans, I hope change comes. I hope one day their voice is finally heard, but for the time being, fans just have to do what New Orleans is best at: staying united and together during a time of struggle.
