The Pelicans' dream of drafting inside the top three of the 2025 NBA draft is over. According to NBA insider Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Philadelphia 76ers have engaged with the San Antonio Spurs about swapping first-round picks. This report alludes to the idea that Philly may have real interest in Dylan Harper and will likely acquire the No. 2 overall pick in a package centered around their No. 3 overall pick.

This news is a gut punch for Pelicans fans.

Less than a week ago, Kevin O'Connor of Yahoo Sports dropped an absolute bombshell about the Pels. He mentioned that Joe Dumars is a big fan of Ace Bailey and that the Pelicans may trade up to No. 3 in the 2025 draft.

The idea of Ace Bailey was fun while it lasted

If Philadelphia is indeed locked in on Harper, it’s hard to imagine them making any move other than trading up with the Spurs. With the Sixers now seemingly committed to securing one of this class’s top blue-chip prospects, the idea of them trading down feels very unlikely. And if a deal with San Antonio falls through, Philly would likely be just fine staying at No. 3 and selecting Bailey.

This is another tough break for the Pels. Despite finishing with the fourth-worst record in the league, they fell to No. 7 in the lottery. That slim hope they had of trading up is now gone. Joe Dumars and the Pelicans’ front office will have to pivot and focus on maximizing the seventh overall pick, something they can't afford to get wrong.

The Western Conference is getting tougher and more competitive every season. Whether it’s Tre Johnson with his All-Star-level potential or a plug-and-play guard like Kon Knueppel, the Pelicans need a player ready to contribute from day one.

There is also a growing possibility that the Pelicans could trade the No. 7 pick for proven win-now talent. If the team is serious about competing next season, they might prefer a known commodity over a rookie. With Dejounte Murray sidelined to start the year, the Pelicans will likely look to add a backcourt spark.

One name to watch is Jordan Poole. The Washington Wizards appear hesitant to commit to him long-term, and his ability to create his own shot and knock down threes could be exactly what New Orleans needs.

Whatever route the Pelicans now decide to take with the No. 7 overall pick, it'll be pivotal for the franchise's future.
