Karlo Matkovic may not be a household name. Currently playing in the Summer League for New Orleans, Matkovic will bring youth and size to a previously non-existent frontcourt. With first-round pick Yves Missi, the signing of Daniel Theis, and now Matkovic, the Pelicans have formed depth at the center position alongside Zion Williamson. Matkovic and the Pelicans agreed to a three-year, $4.9 million contract on July 14. But, who is the 2022 second-round draft pick?
Pick 52 of the 2022 draft pick, the Croatian's size comes to New Orleans with a chance to not only play but form a somewhat formidable frontcourt center with Yves Missi. With a veteran in the locker room after the signing of Daniel Theis, the Pelicans have shooting, defense, athleticism, youth, and size to play alongside the star power of Zion Williamson. Matkovic and the Pelicans appear excited about the new partnership as the start of the season rapidly approaches.
Besides his 6-foot-11 frame, Matkovic has shown flashes of his skillset this Summer League. Despite the concerning 10 turnovers and five fouls through two Summer League games, His defense has been promising, with a combined two steals and four blocks in two games. Matkovic has averaged nine points and six rebounds in two games, making all six free throws. Even though the Croatian has shot 6-of-13 from the field, he's yet to make a three (0-for-4).
One aspect of Matkovic's game flying under the radar is his passing. With five assists versus Orlando, Matkovic's assist total has reached six for the Summer League thus far. With a clear ability to facilitate from the elbow, post, and potentially pick-and-roll, Matkovic has some skills New Orleans can utilize. His shooting is still a work in progress, but he could become a respectable offensive threat with more reps and adjustments to his mechanics.
With untapped potential and skillsets that have become desired needs for the Pelicans,
Matkovic has a chance to play consistent, meaningful minutes for a team retooling their roster to become a contender in the Western Conference. New Orleans' frontcourt feels complete as they prepare for the final offseason stretch before the start of the season.
