Breaking down Karl-Anthony Towns to Pelicans mock trade

Towns does not come cheap. He is about to begin a four-year $221 million extension, and Minnesota’s cost is skyrocketing. The Timberwolves were in the conference finals, but are projected to blow past the new second tax apron. It would mean a hefty luxury tax bill and significant roster-building restrictions, which may not be possible.

Their ownership situation is a mess. Who is writing the checks next season? Can they afford a hefty luxury tax bill or is Minnesota forced to trim payroll? If the Timberwolves decide to change things up, KAT’s contract is most likely to be moved. Minnesota may look to trade it for an expiring contract in hopes of competing now and cutting payroll next summer.

Here is the Bleacher Report proposal that could be beneficial for both sides.

Minnesota had the best defensive rating in the NBA in 2024, but they needed another shot-creator, especially in the playoffs. Brandon Ingram can get buckets and create quality shots. The Wolves also get a KAT replacement in Larry Nance Jr. and a first-round draft pick.

Ingram and Nance are both entering the final year of their contract, which limits Minnesota’s future spending burden. They could make a run in 2025 before reevaluating their financial situation and the state of their roster next summer. This trade makes sense for the Timberwolves, but should New Orleans agree?
