Fair or foul: The New Orleans Pelicans versus Pacers game rescheduled

The New Orleans Pelicans Indiana Pacers game has been rescheduled for March 21st. Is that fair or foul and is there anything the NBA could have done differently?

The New Orleans Pelicans were originally scheduled to play the Indiana Pacers on February 7th. The game was postponed due to a leak in the roof of the Smoothie King Center. That leak has since been fixed and the game has officially been rescheduled.

The NBA announced yesterday that the game will be made up on March 21st. The makeup date has some fans and publications wondering if the NBA dealt the Pelicans a bad hand with the makeup date.

The reason behind this is because it forces the New Orleans Pelicans to take on a long stretch of games just before the end of the season. The Pelicans play the Rockets on the 17th and the Celtics on the 18th. Then on the 20th, they’ll start a back-to-back-to-back against the Mavericks, Pacers, and the Lakers. They’ll get one day off before traveling to Houston to play the Rockets on Saturday, March 24th.

The New Orleans Pelicans will play six games in 10 days including the three games in as many nights homestand. The fact of the matter is there isn’t really a good day over the next month and a half to make up a game for the Pelicans. So, in that regard, it’s foul.

The NBA has completely botched the season already by starting the season almost two weeks early without moving the All-Start Break. Any day that you chose to make up this game would result in a back-to-back-to-back.

Will the NBA change the earlier season opener?

It’s unclear if the NBA is going to look at this season and attempt to adjust to the earlier start. I wouldn’t be surprised if teams began resting players going down the stretch of this season. The New Orleans Pelicans should consider doing so with Anthony Davis. If Davis were to get hurt during the month of March, it would directly affect the Pelicans playoff chances. The same would apply to any number of teams eyeing a playoff berth.

The Pelicans are already somewhat fragile since DeMarcus Cousins suffered his season-ending surgery. As a result, the Pelicans have had to work harder to adjust to life without their second-star player.

Meanwhile, Adam Silver wants Magic Johnson to stop talking about other teams star players. I don’t think Silver is a bad commissioner, but I believe sometimes he tends not see the bigger picture when it comes to the safety of the players.

These next two months for the NBA is going to be very important. It appears that there’s a chance we could see two different teams in the NBA Finals this season. However, injuries and health are going to be a key issue for players and coaches going into the month of May.
