New Orleans Pelicans: Looking at 3 routes the team could take in free agency

Chasing the stars
For one, they could pursue an elite level talent that would spruce up their ever-changing roster. Jrue Holiday is entering the latter years of what is considered his physical prime. Teaming him up with a veteran star sooner than later could be instrumental in getting him to opt into his final contract year in 2021/22, or re-sign with the team.
We’ve mentioned some veteran free agents in a previous article, here. However, there are cons to signing a star to a lucrative deal for the Pels. It could essentially disallow them to find complementary rotational players because they’d be financially handicapped by a substantial contract. Also, the younger players on the roster are going to warrant heftier contracts down the road—that should be taken into consideration.
And does it necessarily fit their timeline at the moment? Should they preserve that cap space and allow this core to develop and mature organically and then when the time is right go for a home run hitter in free agency? Griffin illustrated the point of “sustained success” in his introductory presser, there’s no need to rush and hinder the rebuild.
