The New Orleans Pelicans still have a lot to prove against Washington.

The New Orleans Pelicans‘ chances of making the playoffs are dwindling after their defense failed to show up against the Sacramento Kings.

The Kings scored early, often and from everywhere on the floor, decimating the Pelicans’ defense like it wasn’t even there. In fact, it’s unlikely the Kings could have shot much better in the first half if they were shooting in an empty gym.

The most disappointing part of the loss is not that the Pelicans didn’t play well, it’s that they were out-hustled, out-rebounded and the Kings seemed to want it more.

The Pelicans have been sleepwalking through these games and don’t seem prepared or able to put in the effort necessary to get it done.

On one hand, this is extremely disappointing and changes need to be made.

On the other, this is a good learning experience for a young team that is starting to figure out that you can’t coast through games and you have to bring intensity every night or you’ll get embarrassed.

Let’s hope the Pelicans were ashamed by their effort against the Kings, which is one of the things to look for in tonight’s matchup with the Washington Wizards.

Will the Pelicans Show Some Pride?

One thing to look for in a young team is how they bounce back after a bad loss. They did this once already, winning over a struggling Memphis team after getting blown out by the Clippers.

This loss was far worse, as the Pelicans are better than the Kings, played well offensively, but just couldn’t get a stop.

The Pelicans are certainly better than the shorthanded Wizards, but if they put up another defensive effort like yesterday’s, even the depleted Wiz will blow them out.

The New Orleans Pelicans need to show some heart in this one. They need to show some pride on the defensive end, put in the effort and blow the Wizards out of the gym.

Jobs are definitely on the line here (more on that later), as the Pelicans’ roster is too guard heavy and changes will need to be made.

It’s time for the Pelicans to show some spirit, to play like they care and to be professionals who show up to every game.
