The New Orleans Pelicans Can Become The Next San Antonio Spurs
By Nick Alvarez
Two glaring weaknesses in the New Orleans Pelicans organization need to change if the team wants to match the Spurs
The Head Coach
How many more times can we write about the New Orleans Pelicans head coaching vacancy? I desperately want to see the Pelicans find their coach soon, and they need to if they ever want to be like the San Antonio Spurs.
The Spurs have Gregg Popovich at the helm of their organization and he’s arguably the greatest coach in NBA History. He’s one of the league’s best teachers and the brightest basketball mind you can find.
The New Orleans Pelicans need to find their own coach with those qualities if they ever want to see multiple championships. There are many times when Gregg Popovich wins games for the Spurs by recognizing what other teams are doing, making bold personnel moves, and crafting intriguing plays.
The New Orleans Pelicans need to find a coach to do that for them, or else they’ll fail to ever live up to their expectations.
Consistency and Culture
Time to pump the breaks a little. This is the final trait that the New Orleans Pelicans need to improve to reach the heights the Spurs have in recent years. They need consistency from their roster and a championship culture.
For as talented as the New Orleans Pelicans are, they don’t always play like it. Look at how the Pelicans played recently in the bubble. The team was passive and didn’t play to their strengths. This team is still young and they don’t have what it takes to play tough competitive basketball in a postseason environment just yet.
This connects to the team culture, the San Antonio Spurs spent a lot of time crafting their culture and that’s how they remain competitive. The New Orleans Pelicans are still in the early phases of developing their culture. If they want to win at a high level then that they need to solidify their culture in this offseason.
I’m not saying that the New Orleans Pelicans will ever reach the mountain-sized heights that the San Antonio Spurs organization does but if they continue improving off of the similarities they share with that great franchise, they’ll have a chance!
