The next New Orleans Pelicans coach may be coaching one of their future stars.
The New Orleans Pelicans pulled a draft and stash with young prospect Didi Louzada, but may have also been stashing their next coach.
Will Weaver, coach of the Sydney Kings, is an under-the-radar choice for the Pelicans that makes a whole lot of sense.
Weaver has quietly turned himself into a star candidate after working with some of the game’s best minds and having success every place he’s been.
If you don’t know who he is, you are not alone, as Weaver is one of those guys who toils behind the scenes, but if you are around the game, you know Weaver is a rising star in the coaching ranks.
He also has a connection to Pelicans’ GM Trajan Langdon, who worked closely with Weaver in Brooklyn. Langdon was the GM of the Long Island Nets and Weaver was the coach, taking home G-League coach of the year honors.
Langdon and Weaver worked closely on player development in Brooklyn and if you’ve been paying attention you know that it paid off, as the Nets have some of the best young talent in the league to go along with Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant.
Langdon got to see first hand how well Weaver works with young players, which may be a deciding factor in their final head coaching choice. The Pelicans need a coach who can get the most out of their young talent, and Weaver could be the guy.
Weaver has the resume to be a head coach, but is he a good fit with the New Orleans Pelicans?
