The 2020 NBA Draft could be a turning point for the New Orleans Pelicans.

While the 2020 NBA draft may not be the most important in the New Orleans Pelicans history, it is definitely one of the most important in recent history.

The Pelicans have spent the last two years making necessary changes to the front office and the coaching staff. Now, it’s time to turn their attention to the players on the team. Specifically, they are looking to build for the future as well as for now.

The 2020 draft is a prime opportunity for the Pelicans’ front office and new coach, whoever that may be, to set the stage for what this team’s identity will be for years to come.

Options range from utilizing the picks for building depth to trading away a pick or two to add an experienced player to help lead this young team.

New Orleans Pelicans: The 2020 NBA Draft will dictate the future direction of team.

As we’ve mentioned here, there are several intriguing draft prospects to add to this team that will enhance the assets already in house. There are some really good players and untapped talent in the draft pool that given the right coaching, could make this young team with so much promise even better.

Another option out there is packaging one or two draft picks with a current player in a trade that lands the team another player to lean on for experience and depth at any given position.

Of course, all of that hinges on what other moves the Pelicans make with regards to current players. Like we wrote about earlier, rumors abound over whether Jrue Holiday will remain a Pelican or be part of a bigger trade to a team such as the Nuggets.

Overall, this draft is a toss-up with regards to what needs the team addresses. And what the Pelicans choose to do with their draft night picks will most certainly set the stage for how they approach the 2020-2021 season and what all of us hope is a long run in the playoffs.

Until there is a coach in place, there can’t really be a solid consensus as to how the draft will shape up for the Pelicans.

So for now, we speculate on trades that are not out of the realm of possibility and those that are never going to happen while we have some fun taking a look at the 2020 Draft class.
