The New Orleans Pelicans ship Jrue Holiday to their division rival San Antonio Spurs in the latest hypothetical, but should they?

As the NBA finals near their conclusion, offseason rumors are starting to roar. Considering that the New Orleans Pelicans have an abundance of talent on their roster and a bevy of future draft capital it’s only fitting that they’re considered a major player in offseason trade hype.

With the Pelicans’ roster currently being one of the youngest in the league, it’s no surprise that the player leading all the speculation this offseason is Jrue Holiday.

Holiday as we all know is a New Orleans fan favorite. That’s because the 30-year-old shooting guard has fully embraced New Orleans and loves the city as much as it loves him. This is clear in the frequent contributions he provides to the community and how he opted to sign an extension here back in 2017.

Outside of the love Holiday receives in New Orleans, he’s a supremely talented player. A brilliant offensive ball-handler and lockdown perimeter defender there’s a reason why Holiday was once an All-Star in the league. So why move him?

Entering his thirties, Holiday is clearly on the decline but he still has a few excellent years left. Considering that at times Holiday was an awkward fit with ball-dominant players like Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram on the roster, it might be best for the Pelicans to let him play those final years elsewhere.

Our colleagues over at Air Alamo suggested a trade that would allow Holiday to play his final elite seasons with a top-notch organization in San Antonio.

The New Orleans Pelicans send Jrue Holiday to the Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs are in a unique situation because they don’t know which direction they’re going in as a franchise. The team relies heavily on the veteran duo DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge but also has an intriguing mix of young players who flashed potential in the NBA bubble.

Adding Jrue Holiday to their team is clearly a move to go all-in during the final years of Gregg Popovich’s tenure.

Here’s the deal:

The San Antonio Spurs are on the right track targeting a gettable star in Jrue Holiday but this deal won’t cut it.

Let’s dig deeper into this and evaluate why the Spurs might want to make this move and what the New Orleans Pelicans might think of this offer.
